Multiple Sclerosis Surgery

The Liberation Technique/Treatment

An experimental procedure known as the 'The Liberation Treatment' is a cutting-edge, scientific breakthrough made by Dr Paolo Zamboni of Italy, inspired by the love of his wife Elana. It is proposed that this process may help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with Multiple Sclerosis.

Dr Zamboni had a theory that there could be a condition where the veins draining from the brain were either malformed or blocked, and that it was an underlying cause of MS. He labeled it chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). This unique view has rocked mainstream thinking to its core.

Until this discovery MS was described as an autoimmune condition, where the immune system attacks myelin, a fatty substance coating the nerve cells.

Dr Zamboni noticed that 90% of MS patients had a blockage or malformation in the veins which drain the blood from the brain, that this leads to a dangerous build up of iron in the brain, causing the neurological symptoms associated with MS.

Zamboni believed that if this blockage could be re-opened it could alleviate many of the symptoms. He used a simple surgical procedure known as angioplasty to unblock the veins of 65 patients. The surgical procedure was labeled the "liberation procedure" because it liberated the patients of their blockages.

Dr Zamboni's Initial Studies

In a paper published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, Dr Zamboni reported that in the 18 months following the surgery, he observed;

  • 50 per cent of the MS patients had no further attacks.
  • The rate dropped to 27 per cent in a control group not undergoing surgery.
  • Surgery patients with the brain lesions common to MS dropped to 12 per cent.
  • The rate rose to 50 per cent in the control group.

The conclusions of this test prompted many key figures in the medical profession to concur that this new approach merits serious and robust studies.

Dr. Zamboni pointed out that due to the nature of this degenerative disease, any delay could only effect in the patients situation getting worse. He urged the medical profession to act now before its too late to help current patients.

Dr. Zamboni first considered the Liberation Technique during his desperate attempt to cure his own wife Elana of her deteriorating symptoms, related to MS.

In 1995, as a 37 year old, Elena Ravalli was a seemingly healthy person when she started experiencing temporary loss of eyesight, vertigo attacks, numbness and deliberating fatigue. Her husband Dr Zamboni realized that these symptoms were classic signs of the degenerative disease, multiple sclerosis. This motivated then to strive to solve the mysterious illness known as MS. Before zamboni's research, this was widely accepted as an autoimmune condition.

The successful treatment of Zamboni's wife during her experimental treatment and subsequent tests has offered hope to the 2.5 million sufferers, globally. The idea that this could cure and possibly prevent the degenerating symptoms of this disease is mind blowing.

At the time of this discovery, Dr Zamboni had been researching how blood vessels in the legs were damaged by the build up of Iron. This lead him to the theory that there could be a similar problem in the blood vessels to the brain.

Looking at MS as a vascular condition could be the key factor to unraveling this mysterious illness that has an unknown cause with very few effective treatments.

Using an ultrasound to examine vessels leading to, and from, the brain, Zamboni was shocked to find that in more than 90% of the cases, MS patients had this blockage, but people who had no signs of the disease were clear.

By conducting a simple operation, similar to angioplasty, Zamboni was able to clear the blockage and alleviate the crushing symptoms. His wife who had this surgery has not had any attacks in the 4 years since the operation.

“ I am confident that this could be a revolution for the research and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis ”— Dr. Paolo Zamboni

Dr. Zamboni's wife, Elena, has undergone a battery of neurological tests and scan and she appears to be showing no signs of the symptoms, related to MS.
